What is COVID-19?
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses which may cause illness in animals or humans. In humans, several coronaviruses are known to cause respiratory infections ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the most recently discovered coronavirus. This new virus and disease were unknown before the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. [WHO]
COVID-19 and Lifestyle Medicine
While the possibility of contracting the virus is real, Lifestyle Medicine provides tools to strengthen the immune system. Lifestyle medicine also prevents and often reverses chronic disease, which is a major contributing factor to a more complicated progression of the COVID-19 disease. As Dr David L. Katz reviewed in his recent article, those same chronic conditions bring about many more deaths than this virus does daily.
While media create more stress and fear in the society about this disease, people and medical professionals need practical tools to care for health in the best way possible and Lifestyle Medicine provides just that.
